Medications used to treat Osteoporosis linked to increase risk of Macular Degeneration.

In this study a group of medications used to treat Osteoporosis called Oral Bisphosphonates were shown to be correlated with an increased risk of wet Macular Degeneration (AMD).  The group on these medications showed an approximate 60% increase in the chances of wet AMD over a three-year period of using the drug.   The drugs in the study were alendronate (name brands Fosamax and Binosto), ibandronate  (name brand Boniva) and risedronate (name brands Actonel and Atelvia).  The highest increased risk was in the alendronate group.

Risk of Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) reduced with intake of Marine omega-3 fatty acids.

In middle age and older diabetics there was a significant decrease in the risk of sight threatening DR.  The level of intake was measured at either greater than or less than an average of 500 mg/day.  The individuals in the study who averaged more than 500 mg/day showed a 47% reduction in risk compared to those whose intake was less than 500 mg/day.

An average of 500 mg/day is easily achievable with two weekly serving of an oily fish such as Salmon.

In a national epidemiologic study to determine who is at greatest risk for ocular chemical burns there was a somewhat surprising result that the group with the greatest chances of presenting for an emergency visit for an ocular chemical exposure was 1-2 year olds.  The overwhelming majority of those episodes occurred in the home. If you have toddlers around make sure you are keeping those cleaning products locked away!

Early study on a rat model showed that a test that is now widely available in most Ophthalmology offices (OCT) may be able to detect early signs of Parkinson’s Disease.

Still has not been tested on humans yet but an interesting way to arrive at an early diagnosis.
